Compounding is a centuries old technique of taking bulk ingredients and forming medications for individuals. Pharmacies that compound bioidentical hormones purchase the hormones in bulk from pharmaceutical companies and laboratories that are registered and governed by the Food and Drug Administration. Compounding is simply the mixing of drugs or hormones and/or other ingredients to fit the unique specifications for a patient. The difference between compounded medication and that which is manufactured by pharmaceutical companies, is that they are not mass produced -they are tailor made for a specific individual’s needs.
There are a number of reasons why compounding may be used. Sometimes it is used to add a favorite flavor to a child’s medication for example. At other times it is used to remove a nonessential ingredient that a patient has an allergic reaction to. It may also be done to change the form of a medication (such as from pill to liquid). In the case of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, it is used to obtain the exact dosage needed of a particular hormone-no more, no less. .
In order to receive bioidentical hormones in the appropriate dosage, they must be prescribed by a physician who is experienced in their use. The compounding pharmacist prepares an appropriate dosage of the product for the patient which saves money and time. Custom compounded bioidentical hormones are usually made into creams, capsules or lozenges
You most likely will not find a chain pharmacy that specializes in compounding bioidentical hormones. They are typically independent smaller pharmacies that do compounding. Just like any other pharmacist, those that specialize in compounding carry a license to practice pharmacy and compounding. However, it is still best to seek out a pharmacist who has the additional training of compounding hormones.
